Board of Directors Descriptions
The officers of the USTA/Maryland District shall be composed of
 

1) President,

2) First Vice President,

3) Second Vice President,

4) Secretary,

5) Treasurer,

6) Delegate to USTA/Mid-Atlantic Section 

7) At-large Director

 

The officers of the District shall be elected to a two-term year at an USTA/Maryland annual meeting and shall take office on the January 1 date that follows their election. Officers may not occupy the same position for more than two consecutive terms.

All District officers must be individual members in good standing of the USTA. Pursuant to the By-laws (Article III, Section 3), the officers of the District shall have the full power and authority for the establishment and enforcement of policy of the District’s business, financial and administrative affairs.


President
Qualifications
  1. Understanding and knowledge of the relationship between the District/Section/National USTA
  2. Good organizational, communication and people skills
  3. Ability to attend District, Sectional and National meetings as required
  4. Ability to run a meeting according to Roberts Rules of Order
Responsibilities
  1. Act as Chairman of the Board of Directors and of the Executive Committee
  2. Lead the Board of Directors and Executive Committee in setting goals
  3. Establish a yearly meeting schedule
  4. Preside at all membership meetings where possible
  5. Attend at least 60% of District Board of Directors, special and annual meetings
  6. Except as otherwise provided by the By-laws, select all program chairs and make recommendations for county delegates
  7. Assist the Treasurer in preparing an annual budget
  8. Review annual audits of the District financial reports
  9. Prepare a written report of all District activities for distribution at the District annual meeting
  10. Serve as liaison to the Mid-Atlantic Section and the national USTA on behalf of the District
Time Commitment
  1. The position is designed for a two-year term, with the possibility of reelection to a second two-year term according to the By-laws (Article VIII, Section 2).
  2. Estimated average hours per week are four.
  3. Estimated number of District meetings per year is five.
  4. Estimated number of Section meetings per year is seven.
Compensation/Benefits
  1. Approved out-of-pocket expenses reimbursed, including mileage, telephone, and postage.

First Vice President
Qualifications
  1. Understanding and knowledge of the relationship between the District/Section/National USTA
  2. Good organizational, communication, and people skills
  3. Ability to run a meeting according to Roberts Rules of Order
  4. Ability to attend District, Sectional and National meetings as required
Responsibilities
  1. Assist the President in performance of his/her duties
  2. Assume the office of president and exercise the powers of the President in his/her absence, removal, or resignation.
  3. Oversee the District grants process including the solicitation and review of all applications; recommend expenditures to the board for approval
  4. Serve as the board liaison to the County Delegates
Time Commitment
  1. The position is designed for a two-year term, with the possibility of reelection to a second two-year term according to the By-laws (Article VIII, Section 2).
  2. Estimated average hours per week are three.
  3. Estimated number of District meetings per year is five
  4. Estimated number of Section meetings per year is two

Second Vice President
Qualifications
  1. Understanding and knowledge of the relationship between the District/Section/National USTA
  2. Good organizational, communication, and people skills
  3. Ability to run a meeting according to Roberts Rules of Order
  4. Ability to attend District, Sectional and National meetings as required
Responsibilities
  1. Assist the President and Vice President in his/her duties as directed
  2. Exercise the powers of the First Vice President in his/her absence, removal, or resignation
  3. Collaborate with the Executive Director to design, organize, promote and effectuate the District annual meeting
Time Commitment
  1. The position is designed for a two-year term, with the possibility of reelection to a second two-year term according to the By-laws (Article VIII, Section 2).
  2. Estimated average hours per week are two.
  3. Estimated number of District meetings per year is 5

Secretary
Qualifications
  1. Understanding and knowledge of the relationship between the District/Section/National USTA
  2. Good organizational, communication, and people skills
  3. Ability to attend District, Sectional and National meetings as required
  4. Ability to run a meeting according to Roberts Rules of Order
  5. Ability to compile the official minutes of the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee meetings
Responsibilities
  1. Assist the President in performance of his/her duties
  2. Compile the minutes of all meetings of the Board of Directors and Executive Committee and see that the minutes are distributed
  3. Issue notice of the official District Annual Membership Meeting
  4. Receive nominations for the Board from the Nominating Committee Chair
  5. Certify the voting strength of the membership for the Annual Meeting
  6. Be responsible with the assistance of the Executive Director for keeping accurate membership records

Treasurer
Qualifications
  1. Understanding and knowledge of the relationship between the District/Section/National USTA
  2. Good organizational, communication, and people skills
  3. Accounting knowledge and experience
  4. Ability to attend District, Sectional and National meetings as required
Responsibilities
  1. Be responsible for the financial management of the District
  2. Prepare the District annual budget with the assistance of the President for succeeding year for consideration and approval by the Board of Directors
  3. Prepare and disseminate regular financial reports to the President and the Board of Directors concerning the financial condition of the District
  4. Oversee annual audit with assistance of the Executive Director
  5. Recommend investment strategies for the District
  6. Insure that proper budgetary processes and financial controls are followed

Delegate to the USTA/Mid-Atlantic Section

Qualifications
1. Understanding and knowledge of the relationships among the Maryland District, other Districts, Mid-Atlantic Section, and national USTA
2. It is desirable though not an absolute requirement that this candidate have previous USTA/Maryland Board experience
3. Ability to attend District, Sectional and National meetings as required, and to represent the Maryland District, its policies and programs
4. Good organizational, communication, and people skills. A written report from the Maryland Delegate is expected at each Section Board meeting
5. Knowledge and understanding of Mid-Atlantic Section and USTA national goals, procedures, programs, services and history
 
Responsibilities
1. Represent the USTA/Maryland District at, and in connection with, all USTA/Mid-Atlantic Section official functions.
2. Cast all USTA/Maryland District votes to which the District is entitled at the Section Annual meeting and all other meetings as called by the Section
3. Regularly report to the USTA/Maryland Board of Directors on Section meetings, programs and policies.
 
Time Commitment
1. The position is designed for a two-year term, with the possibility of reelection to a second two-year term according to the By-laws.

4. Estimated number of Section meetings per year is 7.

Board Description – At Large Director

Qualifications
1. Posses a unique skill (fundraiser, etc.) desired by the Maryland District, or represents a special interest or group important to the growth and development of tennis in Maryland, or has made a financial commit to the growth of the Maryland District resources
2. Understanding and knowledge of the relationship between the Maryland District, Mid-Atlantic Section and national USTA
3. Good organizational, communication, and people skills
4. Ability to attend District, Sectional and National meetings as required
Responsibilities
1. Attends at least 60% of all scheduled Board of Directors, special and Annual meetings
Time Commitment
1. The position is designed for a two-year term, with the possibility of reelection to a second two-year term according to the By-laws
2. Estimated average hours per week are two.
3. Estimated number of District meetings per year is five
