News for Maryland Recreation and Parks: QuickStart Tennis - An Easy Fit for Juniors, Good Business for You
Tennis in the Parks Newsletter from the National Recreation and Parks Association
Over 70% of all tennis is played on Public Park tennis courts. The USTA and the National Recreation and Parks Association developed the Tennis in the Parks (TIP) initiative to support local park and recreation agencies eager to increase tennis participation at all public parks. This initiative focuses on three key areas: Programming, Infrastructure and Advocacy. Programming includes support for education, equipment and qualified instruction as well as marketing and program materials. To grow and maintain the infrastructure of the game matching grants for court renovation, facility enhancements and new construction projects are available. The Advocacy initiatives goal is to set up a nationwide network of citizens and community tennis associations supporting funding for public tennis facilities and programs. For more information please go to www.nrpa.org/usta or www.usta.com.
USTA/Maryland is dedicated to seeing the public park infrastructure expand and tennis participation grow throughout the state. Our Advocacy mission statement is “USTA/Maryland is committed to the preservation and enhancement of the statewide tennis court infrastructure without which tennis programs and players cannot grow.” We are presently developing a statewide network of advocates to aid our efforts in working with local, city and state government agencies and to establish a “watchdog” network that keeps us informed of current issues in all neighborhoods, cities and counties. This will enable us to better serve our members.
We also support infrastructure expansion through our Fix-A-Court grant program. This grant program offers up to $5,000 for public facilities that are renovating existing courts and are members in good standing of USTA/Maryland. Preference is given to those that have also secured some local funding. The facility must comply with all applicable ADA requirements. The Fix-A-Court application, and criteria, can be found on our website www.maryland.usta.com
