This past weekend 30 teams and a total of 245 players from across the Mid-Atlantic came together to compete at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, VA. This round robin tournament gave teams a chance to experience the JTT TEAM format in a shortened version, rather than playing in a traditional four week local season. Teams competed in eight different divisions for a chance to win a wildcard to their respective JTT State Championship on July 21st and 22nd.
In the 10 and under advanced division, teams played on the 78 foot court with the green dot ball. The TCCP Tennis Terminators from College Park, MD, captained by Leslie Robins and David Boyd dominated Virginia’s NOVA Rising Stars 62 to 30.
Maryland continued their winning streak by taking the 10 and under Intermediate division as well. The TCCP Tornados captained by Paul Schultz rallied his team to defeat Team Regency, from McLean, as well as their home club team the TCCP Aces by only five games.
The 18-and-Under Intermediate flight was the largest flight with a total of eight teams competing for the wildcard. Teams were spilt into two flights of four and The Spartans and The PG Blue team, both from Maryland, battled it out in the final in the last match of the day. The seasoned team from Montgomery County, The Spartans won 21 to 11 against Prince George’s PG Blue team.
The Tennis Center at College Park will be hosting the USTA Maryland JTT States Championships on July 21-22, 2012. Contact USTA Maryland, Program Coordinator Barbara Linke to get in the game of Jr. Team Tennis at: blinke@mas.usta.com
