Shriver-Harman Youth Tennis Scholarships Started

Part of the proceeds from a recent gala will be used to establish the Shriver-Harman Youth Tennis Scholarships, which will cover the costs of training for 43 weeks per year in the JTCC Advanced Development Program for specially selected players ages 7-10 from Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia. A seminar for players, and parents of aspiring NCAA college tennis players. This session will help guide players and parents on the various rules, recruiting process, approaches, and expectations of playing college tennis. UMD Tennis Player John Collins Staying Positive

University of Maryland tennis player John Collins is optimistic about the men’s tennis team despite an unfortunate situation. Effective July 12, 2012 the men’s tennis program at Maryland’s flagship university will be cut, along with seven other varsity sports to alleviate the athletic department’s multi-million dollar budget deficit. Since university president Wallace Loh finalized the decision on Nov. 21, teams and athletes have had time to soak in the situation. Read More
 

10 and Under Tennis Takes to the Turf at Myers Indoor Soccer Pavilion

Blustery spring weather didn’t keep these kids from the courts on Saturday, March 26. Instead, they brought the courts inside for an afternoon of friendly tennis competition at the Myers Indoor Soccer Pavilion in Baltimore. With support from the Baltimore City Recreation and Parks Department, the Baltimore Tennis Club, Friends of Patterson Park, and USTA Maryland, 32 kids from three Baltimore City recreation centers came together for a QuickStart Tennis “Play Day.” Read More
 

Local Juniors Bring Home Gold at Spring Nationals

MOBILE, Ala.—Three Maryland and Virginia standouts received gold balls at the USTA 18s Spring Nationals held March 13-19. The 4th seeded duo of Bethesda, MD, native Skylar Morton and her partner Kyle McPhillips of Willoughby, OH, collected their second gold ball together. The Boys’ doubles team of Anton Kovrigin of Rockville, MD, and Jason Luu of Fairfax, VA, also struck gold. Read More
