6th Annual Blacks in Wax - Friday, February 24th & Saturday, March 3rd
February 10, 2012 10:02 AM
In celebration of Black History Month, the Recreation Wish List Committee (RWLC) in partnership with the DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) will present the Southeast Tennis and Learning Center’s (SETLC) 6th Annual Blacks in Wax.
Our first performance will be held at Southeast Tennis and Learning Center on Friday, February 24, 2012 from 7:00PM - 9:00PM. We are proud to again present our second performance at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday, March 3, 2012 from 4:30PM - 5:30PM (Museum - Hall of States) & 5:30PM- 7:00PM (Vignette - Millennium Stage).
This year's event theme is “Movement to Monument.” The event includes an interactive museum of youth who pose as still figures and, when a button is pushed, come alive to speak about the life and achievements of the figure they are representing. It culminates with a vignette which is based in part on the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In preparation to portray these historic figures, youth complete background research and prepare to teach visitors about the life and work of the figures they are representing.
These critically acclaimed, awe inspiring events highlight the lives of many African American entertainers, athletes, writers, performers and civil rights icons who have used their talent and skills to benefit the well-being of the community and the world. Come witness over 70 “tennis scholars” ages 7-17, transform from a wax replica of a character, to a live portrayal of some of the most notable African American leaders.
Hope to see you there!
